We received a photo of our new house in Dakar. keep in mind it is a bungalow. I guess it's okay, but it's nothing like our Portland farm house. Does anyone have any cheap, resourceful, green, decorating ideas?
Wait 'til you get there, friend - you'll probably get lots of inspiration from your surroundings and might find that whatever you were thinking about doesn't really fit. :-)
It might be the way the photo was shot, but your new house looks round. Is that the definition of a bungalow? Readymade (the DIY magazine) featured a "curtain" that someone made to cover their unsightly air conditioner. The curtain was made out of the accordion paper that is placed in cookie tins. The person had glued together about a hundred of those and the effect was surprising nice! It didn't look like an air conditioner at all. More like a modernist wall hanging.
My advice is to brush up on your French and check out the local market. You'll surely find tons of baskets, and textiles galore. Senegal is known for embroidery, I'm sure you'll be able to commission wall hangings. Make sure to get advice from local Africans who can let you know how much you should expect to pay and where to go to find more interesting, non-touristy stuff.
